Subject: | Moose::Manual::Support documentation on minimum perl version |
I copied Jesse Luehrs since he is credited with this bit of Support.pod.
As of version 2.00, Moose officially supports being run on perl 5.8.3+. Our
current policy is to support the earliest version of Perl shipped in the latest
stable release of any major operating system (this tends to mean CentOS). We
will provide at least six months notice (two major releases) when we decide to
increase the officially supported Perl version. The next time this will happen
is in January of 2012, when Moose 2.06 will increase the minimum officially
supported Perl version to 5.10.1.
This information is two years old. I know from tickets like https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=75265 that older Perls may have issues with Moose and that people have wanted to deprecate them for a while but probably have left it due to the hassle of changing it.
If 5.8.3 still passes all tests and everyone wants to continue supporting it, I propose that the last line be dropped from the support page "The next time this will happen is in January of 2012, when Moose 2.06 will increase the minimum officially supported Perl version to 5.10.1."
If people want to bump it then now may be the time. I've verified CentOS 6.5 has 5.10.1.
