I've finally released v0.24 and it includes your patch below. I wasn't in a rush since you said you had already implemented this patch for yourself.
It should show up on CPAN inside the next several hours or so. (v0.24)
But I do have a question. Did you ever have this issue on a data connection? I was just wondering if I should plan on making the same changes there in a future release. I haven't done it so far since I've never seen this problem happening on a data channel.
