Subject: -w test failes mysteriously
Myesterious error in File/Temp.pm v0.14 row 420. (-w _) failes. But it works if you change it to (-w $parent) This error was found under perl 5.8.4 in Debian, under mod_perl calling tempfile with DIR prefix. It looks like a perl bug. But it can be avoided by the suggestion above.

The problem was occuring because '-' was overloaded, failing the filetest. No problem with this module.
