Your META.yml looks like this: https://metacpan.org/source/DCONWAY/Lexical-Hints-0.000004/META.yml With abstract: abstract: A featureful replacement for create_distdirH Woah. I couldn't reproduce this re-building your dist after downloading and deleting META. Either your MakeMaker version has a bug, or it's rebuilding from a committed META.yml that has the weird problem, I suspect. -- rjbs

Hmmmmm. Not sure what caused that. *Something* didn't like having '$^H' in the abstract and decided to shell-expand the $^ part somehow. And I can't reproduce it either, even under earlier versions of EU::MM. Odd. Anyway, the real bug was that that $^H should of course have been %^H. ;-) Fixed and reuploaded, with no repeat of the bizarreness: https://metacpan.org/source/DCONWAY/Lexical-Hints-0.000005/META.yml Thanks for the report.
