Hi! I'm attaching a patch to add a "template_binmode" option. This allows the binmode for the template files to be specified. This is particularly useful when reading UTF-8 files.
It would be cleaner if I could figure out what the correct default value for binmode is, but I think that may not be consistent across platforms...
