Subject: PDL::Graphics::Gnuplot-1.3 freezes with more than 6 simple curves in multiplot
Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2013 08:56:14 +0000 (GMT)
To: "bug-PDL-Graphics-Gnuplot [...] rt.cpan.org" <bug-PDL-Graphics-Gnuplot [...] rt.cpan.org>
From: Jürgen Mück <jurgen.muck [...] yahoo.de>
Craig,   I'm very happy with your and Dima's module and am using it extensively.   I found that multiplot freezes Perl script execution when plotting more than say 6 or 7 curves. I have to kill gnuplot.exe manually in the (Windows) task manager. Attached is a small test script tested with PDL::Graphics::Gnuplot-1.3.   The problem occures on my both machines:   Work: Windows XP SP3 (Intel CPU), 32bit, Perl 5.12.4, PDL 2.4.9,  Gnuplot 4.6 Home: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit AMD,  Perl 5.14.2, PDL 2.4.11, Gnuplot ?   On my home machine I didn't test it with the script but with my real code. But I'm pretty sure that the behavior is identical.   More details and variations can be found in the attached script.   Chears, Juergen

Craig, my example is not minimal, the error description neither. The error is not related multiplot, it also happens when the respective lines (27, 36) are commented in my script. The only difference is that the multiplot command creates a window before Gnuplot is freezing. I tested it now on my home machine with Gnuplot 4.7. Jürgen, the script works perfectly for me on MacOS X with Gnuplot 4.6 and the current github version of PDL::Graphics::Gnuplot. Hi Jurgen. I've been mucking with gnuplot internals recently, and it's in a bit of flux right now, especially if using the x11 terminal and especially when touching multiplots. So do stick with gnuplot 4.6 for the time being.

Craig, Dima, Maybe it's a MS Windows problem.  (a) I tried some minutes ago on my work machine, same behavior. I'm sure to use the github-master version. (b) See attached file, from perl -V (my work machine). Gnuplot on my work machine says: G N U P L O T         Version 4.6 patchlevel 0    last modified 2012-03-04         Build System: MS-Windows 32 bit As written it is not a problem of multiplot. And it also occures with gnuplot 4.6, too (this machine). Is there a way to activate logs of data that are exchanged with gnuplot? Might that help? Juergen PS: I hope I reach you both, Craig and Dima. I'm not familiar with rt.cpan.org up to now. Von: Dima Kogan via RT <bug-PDL-Graphics-Gnuplot@rt.cpan.org> Show quoted text

Hi, Jurgen, Is this fixed with the latest git of P::G::G? There's been a lot of updating of the commlink to Gnuplot in the last couple of weeks. All the best, Craig On Thu Jan 17 07:56:47 2013, jurgen.muck@yahoo.de wrote: Show quoted text

Hi Craig, P::G::G still freezes. But maybe the console log (includes some comments) could help with fresh information. Just to clarify: The problems (freezing) occures even without multiplot, but using multiplot lets the window appear before freezing. And killing the window (manually) gives some interesting debugging information, I hope. I can't remember that I have seen this output before. Unfortunately I'm completely unfamiliar with pipes etc., so I can't dive into what happens and debug on my own. Good luck! Juergen zowie via RT schrieb: Show quoted text

This is a reproducible problem with Strawberry Perl under Microsoft Windows. It seems to be associated with binary communication over a pipe. While the underlying problem has not been resolved, it is worked around in the current (v1.4) module by forcing data communications into ASCII mode.

Better and better! Chris Marshall tested with SP and duplicated the problem, so it is a Microsoft Windows problem. On Feb 26, 2013, at 10:18 PM, Jürgen Mück via RT <bug-PDL-Graphics-Gnuplot@rt.cpan.org> wrote: Show quoted text

Subject: Re: [rt.cpan.org #82742] PDL::Graphics::Gnuplot-1.3 freezes with more than 6 simple curves in multiplot

freezing and solution confirmed with Strawberry Perl Portable 5.16.2.2 on a stick

I found with plot.t that
ok 6 - basic plotting created an output file
main::(t/plot.t:49):      ok($filestats[7] > 79*24*0.8, 'basic plotting created a reasonably-sized file')
main::(t/plot.t:50):        or diag "resulting output file should be ascii 79x24, but only contains $filestats[7] bytes";
  DB<2> print $testoutput
pdl_graphics_gnuplot_test_N53U528
  DB<3> n
not ok 7 - basic plotting created a reasonably-sized file
#   Failed test 'basic plotting created a reasonably-sized file'
#   at t/plot.t line 49.
# resulting output file should be ascii 79x24, but only contains 0 bytes

The file exists, is filled with an ascii chart and has a reasonable size (1645 bytes), so obviously it's a problem of using a cheap USB stick with FAT32  under Win7 64bit in a SPP shell blablabla ...but not a problem of your P::G::G.

All other tests succeed so I wouldn't bother.

Chears,
Jurgen

ups, it was with ActiveStatePerl all the time ...

I'll test it with SP, maybe you are right nevertheless ...

This is a reproducible problem with Strawberry Perl under Microsoft Windows. It seems to be
associated with binary communication over a pipe. While the underlying problem has not been
resolved, it is worked around in the current (v1.4) module by forcing data communications into
ASCII mode.
