Subject: sometimes generates backslashes that shouldn't be there
There were some backslashes that shouldn't have been there when I converted this file: https://github.com/bcrowell/when/blob/master/when Some were from code like the following: =item B<i> Boldface worked in general, but didn't in this context, maybe because it was inside an item? Also, the * character was incorrectly backslashed in the output.

The effects you seem come from a patch that is distributed with the Debian version (which is based off of an old version of this module). See https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=75620 I have no control over the debian version and no idea how to get it updated. Please try again using the latest version from cpan and see if you notice any other problems. Thanks.
