There is no information here that can help with a diagnosis. What does "service php-fcgi restart" do? Does it operate on a pid file directly, or perform a Daemon::Control command, or...? What was the pid that was operated on, vs. what you expected?

Sorry, I thought I included a link to the source code. That command will run an init script which runs this Daemon::Control script: https://github.com/doherty/php-fcgi/blob/master/bin/php-fcgi The error occurs at the ps command at https://metacpan.org/source/SYMKAT/Daemon-Control- 0.000009/lib/Daemon/Control.pm#L244 I'm not sure relying on the behaviour of the ps command is the right thing to do here.
