Subject: Installing Variable::Magic crashes Perl Command Line Interpreter
Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2012 22:02:31 +0000
To: bug-Variable-Magic [...] rt.cpan.org
From: Iain Elder <iainelder [...] hotmail.co.uk>
Distribution: Variable-Magic-0.52 Perl: v5.16.1 built for MSWin32-x64-multi-thread Patch: ActivePerl Build 1601 [296175] Operating System: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200] Hi Vincent, CPAN fails to install the module Variable::Magic on my machine. A Windows error dialog interrupts the installation process. It looks like this: """ Perl Command Line Interpreter has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. """ After closing the dialog, one of the tests fails: Show quoted text
> t/17-ctl.t ................ Dubious, test returned 255 (wstat 65280, > 0xff00)
Finally, CPAN refuses to install the module: Show quoted text
> make test had returned bad status, won't install without force
I've attached a compressed crash dump and the output of my Command Prompt session. I hope you find these useful in fixing the problem. Thanks, Iain -- Iain Elder iainelder@hotmail.co.uk +447714160586

Thank you very much for your detailed report. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a Windows 8 system, so I can't investigate this further. I tried to replicate it with the same ActivePerl build on darwin, but the test passes, suggesting that AP isn't to blame here. In about three weeks, I'll be in position to try on Windows 7, which I hope is close enough from your setup to reproduce the failure. In the meanwhile, I'd suggest using the PPM version of Variable::Magic, which builds and passes all tests correctly according to http://ppm4.activestate.com/MSWin32-x64/5.16/1600/V/VP/VPIT/Variable-Magic-0.52.d/log-20121105T030303.txt (though I don't know which version of Windows they're testing with). Vincent.
