allocating and requiring to allow allocation of complete rows is memory wasteful

Especially since we require allocation of a row of i_fcolor objects,
which a 4 x a double (32-64 bytes) in size.
Functions which process row-wise (most) should process several
thousand samples at a time to reduce memory allocation requirements.
Typically only an issue for very large images.
