Subject: Make Maker with LARGE module list
Download bioperl 1.0 from ftp://bioperl.org/pub/DIST/bioperl-1.0.0.tar.gz or from CPAN, run % perl Makefile.PL % make The POD making will fail because the module list is not broken up there. % make install will also fail for the same reason

Oops, forgot to mention this is on machines with small shell buffers like IRIX.
Subject: Make Maker with LARGE module list on IRIX
Known problem, it's in the TODO list. Do you have the same problem with MakeMaker 5.45? (ie. the stock one that comes with 5.6.1).

Well, at least things are improving. :)

The problem continues with 6.03, BTW. -Allen

Is there any chance and progress on this bug or a viable workaround - still open after 6 months? We're still having users report problems on MakeMaker 6.03 http://bugzilla.bioperl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1351

We know how to fix it. The proper fix is deep and will require a lot of internal rejiggering and cleanup, but it has to happen anyway. Much of that has already happened in the past few months. Progress on MakeMaker is slow both because of the messy nature of the code, the tricky nature of the problem and the lack of active developers. If you want things fixed faster, join makemaker@perl.org, look at makemaker.org and help out. A simple work around was posted here a while ago. Simply stub out the manifypods target. You won't get man pages, but you will at least build. package MY; sub manifypods { my $self = shift; if( $^O eq 'irix' ) { return "\nmanifypods : pure_all\n\t$self->{NOECHO}\$(NOOP)\n" } else { return $self->SUPER::manifypods(@_); } } This p5p thread about pm_to_blib covers the internals of the problem: http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/perl5-porters/2002-09/msg01192.html
Internal rejiggering complete! bioperl should now build on IRIX just fine no matter how big it gets. Try the snapshot on makemaker.org, please, or the alpha on CPAN.
