Subject: redirect old META-spec.html to CPAN::Meta::Spec
The old META spec 1.4 is hosted here: http://module-build.sourceforge.net/META-spec.html This page is outdated as the META spec 2.0 is now published in CPAN::Meta::Spec. However, many documents (in particular POD pages of CPAN modules) still point to this address as the reference specification. This page should instead be replaced with a link to http://search.cpan.org/dist/CPAN-Meta/lib/CPAN/Meta/Spec.pm -- Olivier Mengué - http://search.cpan.org/~dolmen/ http://github.com/dolmen/
I believe that's been fixed in the repo in commit 786c1fc. It's not a perfect solution because Module::Build really only implements the version 1.4 spec in the API and that gets upgraded by CPAN::Meta to version 2.0 for output. After 5.14, Module::Build should really implement the 2.0 spec properly. -- David

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing. This bug is about the web site hosted at SourceForge: http://module-build.sourceforge.net/ The META-Spec.html is still dated "25-Jun-2008 04:08". -- Olivier Mengué - http://search.cpan.org/~dolmen/ http://github.com/dolmen/

This seems to be a task for KWilliams as he owns the SourceForge project. However I would be glad to do it if I'm granted the rights on the project (my SourceForge account is "dolmen" too). -- Olivier Mengué - http://search.cpan.org/~dolmen/ http://github.com/dolmen/

I'm happy to, do you have the rights to edit now? -Ken

Also, if there's a better home for the official spec than the Module-Build website on sourceforge, I think we should just redirect people to it. -Ken

The CPAN::Meta::Converter uses this if an alternative URL is not provided: http://search.cpan.org/perldoc?CPAN::Meta::Spec That's probably the right place to direct people as it should be stable over time. -- David

As the repository is now on Github, you could use their Project Pages system to host it. http://pages.github.com/ That would go a step further to decommissioning the SF site. -- The interface should be as clean as newly fallen snow and its behavior as explicit as Japanese eel porn.

Thanks. Done. I have installed 301 (permanent) redirects in the .htaccess so that all "current spec" URL redirect to http://search.cpan.org/dist/CPAN-Meta/lib/CPAN/Meta/Spec.pm I have not used the /perldoc?CPAN::Meta::Spec URL because this URL is a 302 (temporary) redirect to the latest spec, but not to a permalink target. Also search engines don't like 302. I don't think it would be a good idea to drop module-build.sourceforge.net as many documents point to it. Moving to pages.github.com would not bring any value and even has less as it lacks redirect management. -- Olivier Mengué - http://search.cpan.org/~dolmen/ http://github.com/dolmen/
Thanks for taking care of this. On Thu Feb 24 20:19:19 2011, DOLMEN wrote: Show quoted text

I agree, I think we should keep it in its current location until/unless it gets hosted somewhere outside M::B's purview entirely. -Ken
