As long as compat version of libusb.so is a wrapper over libusb 1.x.x, C function names prefixed with "libusb_" defined at USB.pm interfere with the same names in libusb 1.x.x. That results in improper linking and segfaults. So, you can use just a simple command sed -i.orig s/\\blibusb_/wrap_usb_/g ./lib/Device/USB.pm ./t/pod- coverage.t before compiling the module to be able to use the current libusb distribution.

I have the same issue with Fedora 17 alpha. I have installed both libusb-1:0.1.3-10.fc17.x86_64 and libusb1-1.0.9-0.6.rc1.fc17.x86_64 Thanks to yespiritu13y instractions I was able to install Device::USB (doing make; make test; make install) I wanted to install it because I need it to get working a temp sensor following this article: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10809?page=0,1 So after installing Device::USB I installed Device::USB::PCSensor::HidTEMPer AFAIK, both seens to be installed correctly [root@munin ~]# cpan Device::USB CPAN: Storable loaded ok (v2.27) Reading '/root/.cpan/Metadata' Database was generated on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 10:15:03 GMT CPAN: Module::CoreList loaded ok (v2.65) Device::USB is up to date (0.35). [root@munin ~]# cpan Device::USB::PCSensor::HidTEMPer CPAN: Storable loaded ok (v2.27) Reading '/root/.cpan/Metadata' Database was generated on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 10:15:03 GMT CPAN: Module::CoreList loaded ok (v2.65) Device::USB::PCSensor::HidTEMPer is up to date (0.04). I execute the first example, but I've got the follwing error: Undefined subroutine &Device::USB::libusb_open called at /root/perl5/lib/perl5/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/Device/USB/Device.pm line 274, <DATA> line 1. Can anyone give me any tip ?. I have no idea about Perl :/ BTW, is there any plan to be able to install Device::USB without any workaround ?
At a first glance, it does not appear to be calling the code compiled through Inline::C. Are you sure the code made successfully? As for installation without the work-arounds, the problem lies in the fact that libusb completely changed the API between versions. I no longer have the spare time to work on the module and I don't really have an immediate need for it any more, so the module ends up needing some help. I'm willing to give co-maintainership to anyone willing to do fix these issues and even turn over the module to someone who has more time and inclination to work on it. So far, no takers. G. Oops, my bad, that was not all places require mentioned naming replacement. The right variant is: sed -i.orig s/\\blibusb_/wrap_usb_/g ./*.{pm,pl} ./lib/Device/*.pm ./lib/Device/USB/*.pm ./t/*.t Yes, pod-coverage.t checks these module private names. By idea, this naming change should be committed to fix the issue. And I can be the co-maintaineer as long as I'm working in this area right now. Hi Sasha, I now have the code on github (https://github.com/gwadej/perl-device-usb). Probably the best thing to do would be to fork the project and see what you can do. Send me a pull request when you have something. I can give a little help if you don't understand something. Once we get your changes in, I can push a new version and add you to the co-maint list, so you can maint without going through me. G.
