I was building a perl 5.8.9 under a limited environment using -Dextras, and
cpan failed in a weird way:

Eventually, it apparently output some temrinal reset sequence, so I
couldn't even see what's going on.
I dont know what exactly caused it, but my guess is that it's caused by
gzip not being found (which is indeed missing).
It would be nice it cpan handled this more gracefully (but of course not
required).
Or maybe CPAN does handle it fine already (perl 5.8.9 is pretty ancient,
but the last perl that successfully builds statically).
