It isn't clear whether it was just a problem with the patch file itself or some incompatibility between his implementation and the current release. I just applied Joel Knight's patch to 1.3.1 which was pretty straightforward once I deleted all but the new code. It seems to work just fine in the limited testing I've done. Do you have any objection to the copyright notices he has in his modules? I've attached the diff.

Mr. Knight brought the previous ticket to my attention: 62197. He wants to keep his licenses but has agreed to host the updated patch on his web site so it will be pretty straightforward for people to integrate it.
