Expect.pm uses the variables $`, $', and $&. This slows down Expect and every program which uses Expect. For details see http://search.cpan.org/search?query=SawAmpersand&mode=module Please consider the attached patch to get rid of these variables. The patched Expect.pm has been tested and used in production for years.

Rest of the variables were removed in 1.27. This ticket can be closed now.
