Subject: Requiring perl 5.10.0
I have packages that require Date::Manip. Unfortunately pulling in Date::Manip as a dependency gives: CPAN.pm: Going to build S/SB/SBECK/Date-Manip-6.07.tar.gz Perl v5.10.0 required--this is only v5.8.8, stopped at Makefile.PL line 3. It's true, this is a 5.8.8 system. Are you intentionally dropping 5.8 support?
For Date::Manip 6.xx, I HAVE dropped support for perl < 5.10. However, I am still supporting the Date::Manip 5.xx releases for older versions of perl However, as you noticed, the automatic installs fail. I'm fixing this in version 6.10 which should be released within a couple days. I am combining both Date::Manip 5.xx and Date::Manip 6.xx into the Date-Manip-6.xx distribution, and the appropriate one will be installed based on your version of perl. You will of course not have access to the new functionality of Date::Manip 6.xx, but at least you'll have the old version. Until the new release hits CPAN, you'll have to manually install the most recent 5 release (5.56) from CPAN.
