Pod::Readme is ancient/unmaintained and can't handle things in the POD spec, including certain escapes like E<sol>. Need to talk to rjbs and others working on improving POD and figure out the new "best" POD to text converter. Fancy features of Pod::Readme will have to go if it's not being maintained.
One option might be to allow (yet another) command line option to set the default pod converter and let people put it in their .modulebuildrc files.
