In libwww-perl 5.834 the LWP.pm pod says "news" urls default to the "NNTP_SERVER" environment variable, but I think it may be "NNTPSERVER", per Net::NNTP. Perhaps it'd be easier to cross-reference to Net::NNTP, as it also looks at "NEWSHOST" and Net::Config, or some such.
