Subject: C<^> is turned into \texttt{\char94\{\}}, which LaTeX renders as ^{}
A caret in inline code, C<^>, is turned into \texttt{\char94\{\}}, which pdflate in turn displays as ^{}, so an additional pair of braces is shown in the final output. In block code this bug isn't present.
