Hi Late in the process of running the 5.10.0.6 install package on Windows 7 (build 7600, rtm) I got a series of warnings like the one shown, each saying that a shortcut could not be created. This is the first time I've attempted to install any form of Perl or CPAN bits. I am an administrator on this account, but I didn't run the package in elevated admin mode. Mike

That would most likely be why. The shortcuts install to the "All Users" shortcut directory, not an individual's shortcut directory. That takes the elevated admin mode, and I know that Vista and 2008 ask for the elevation when you click on "Install". I'm puzzled why Win7 didn't - or did it and you said not to let it elevate? --Curtis

In Windows 7 the install automatically elevates - I don't get a choice in the matter. A start menu folder wascreated for SP but if was empty The result was that I have no idea where SP was installed. I could run CPan from the start menu but I couldn't find anything under Program Files where anything else might have installed. In the end I gave up and uninstalled it. FYI, if you want to try again: It installs to c:\strawberry. (The compilation toolchain doesn't support spaces in directory names - and won't until January 2010 at least - so it can't go under Program Files yet.) I am honestly puzzled as to why this error happens, but I don't have a Windows 7 machine to test against ATM. I'm going to have to say that this bug is "stalled" until I do (which should be soon after the official "October 22nd" release date at the latest.)

I've tried 5.10.1.0 on my new Win7 Home Premium installation and it does not give this error. Could you try that, please? [I'll check 5.10.0.6 in a while.] --Curtis
