Subject: IO::File->new() doesn't obey Unicode settings
I get different behavior opening a file depending on whether I use open() or IO::File->new(): --------------------------- % perl -Cio -le 'open($f, "< /tmp/testfile.txt") or die $!; $line=<$f>; print "is utf8: ", utf8::is_utf8($line)' is utf8: 1 % perl -Cio -le 'open($f, "/tmp/testfile.txt") or die $!; $line=<$f>; print "is utf8: ", utf8::is_utf8($line)' is utf8: 1 % perl -MIO::File -Cio -le '$f=IO::File->new("/tmp/testfile.txt") or die $!; $line=<$f>; print "is utf8: ", utf8::is_utf8($line)' is utf8: % perl -MIO::File -Cio -le '$f=IO::File->new("< /tmp/testfile.txt") or die $!; $line=<$f>; print "is utf8: ", utf8::is_utf8($line)' is utf8: --------------------------- I know IO::File uses open() behind the scenes, but I haven't yet figured out why the behavior is different. The above is with perl 5.8.8 on OS X 10.5.7, and I get the same results using perl 5.10.0. Yes IO::File does eventually call open() It seems the effect of -C is lexical to the main script $ cat Foo.pm open($f, "< /tmp/testfile.txt") or die $!; $line=<$f>; print "is utf8: ",utf8::is_utf8($line); $ perl -Cio -I. -l -MFoo -e1 is utf8:

Oh, how horrible. I guess a -C doc patch or behavior patch is in order, then. Thanks for finding the problem. -Ken
