Subject: Backend functionality does not work
The backend functionality (tie an internal backend hash to some persistency class) doesn't work; the code tries to store the backend cache data in the tuning hash instead of the backend hash. Patch forthcoming, as I removed some of the tuning cache code while fixing the backend code.

Here's the patch. Part of the tuning code is still stubbed out; I couldn't quite suss out what it was supposed to be doing.
