Subject: Quoting unlikely wiki strings

It would be helpful if the converter would double quote strings that are unlikely to be meant to be wiki control codes when appearing in HTML. For example, the string #__ used in some software documentation needs to be converted to #""__"" for the wiki output. Same applies to other wiki control codes.

Please let me know what dialect (or wiki engine) you're referring to. Offhand, I'm not sure what dialect would require that sort of escaping. Thanks! -- David Iberri

I'm using Wikka Wiki. The page that prompted my suggestion is at http://docs.aliro.org/AliroAbstractDatabase. You'll see the use of double underscore in the text. Putting the original HTML through the convertor leaves the double underscore untouched. But Wikka Wiki thinks that double underscore is used to make text underlined (e.g. by writing __underlined__). So the double underscore is not displayed, and instead following text is underlined. This is not right. To display the double underline using Wikka Wiki, it has to be enclosed in double double quotes. The same sort of problem would arise with other characters, such as the equals sign, which has a styling meaning in Wikka Wiki. It seems relatively simple (!) to handle this because only a limited number of characters are used for styling in Wikka Wiki and there is no reason to suppose that if they appear in the original HTML they are intended to be wiki styling elements. On the contrary, they are presumably part of the text, since HTML is not aimed at wiki engines. So it would make sense to put double double quotes round anything that looked like a wiki styling string (or whatever quoting mechanism is used by other dialects).
