which have been formed from the initial letters of words in a
phrase ...
Why do you write 'sometimes inaccurately called "acronyms"'? Without a
citation, it might be thought a rather arrogant statement. I hope you
will find the definition from the OED useful, below, and would be
interested to learn of your own source.
