Subject: available languages
It might be nice if the base class had an available method, that auto-discovered backends, and created a cached list of the language pairs they (currently) support, rather than the user needing to do it.

Of course, this would be a whole lot easier if the backends didn't insist that: available() is an object method (rather than package method or function) thereby absurdly requiring the creation of a new object...
