The fact that this happens, but is not documented, is rather annoying. It's certainly conceivable that someone might prefer to display a price as "$12.00" rather than "$ 12.00", particularly in light of the fact that the latter may end up getting broken across multiple lines.
It'd better to make inserting a space optional, and documented.
