Subject: Bug Report - ExifTool 7.26

From: David Pitcher <pitcherd1 [...] msn.com>
I just downloaded and installed the latest ExifTool from http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ and am no longer to recursively scan thru a series of child directories. I have been able to do this in the past using ExifTool 7.06 Platform Information: ActivePerl 5.8.8.822 Windows XP SP2 ExifTool 7.26 Image Directory Structure: DNG DNG\Test\Image1.dng DNG\Archive\Image2.dng DNG\Working\Image3.dng Repro Steps: Execute the command "exiftool.pl -r -XMP:LensType DNGs Error Message: 'x' outside of string in unpack at lib/Image/ExifTool.pm line 2329 Cheers, David
From: EXIFTOOL [...] cpan.org
I think your "Image1.dng" file is causing problems because this exact command works for me (albeit, running on a different system) with a test DNG file and the same directory structure. Could you post your test file somewhere so I can test it out, or mail it to me directly at phil at owl.phy.queensu.ca? Thanks.

I have been able to narrow down the problem further and believe the conflict is between the latest Adobe DNG Converter and changes made to the Exif.pm module. Validation Repro Steps: Execute ExifTool -EXIF:Make against a Canon 1Ds Mark III CR2 file without an error Convert CR2 raw file to DNG with Adobe DNG Converter version 4.4.1.85 Execute ExifTool -EXIF:Make against DNG file and get an error - 'x' outside of string in unpack lib/Image/ExifTool.pm line 2329 Replace lib/Image/ExifTool/Exif.pm with Exif.pm from the ExifTool 7.06 package Execute ExifTool -EXIF:Make against DNG file without an error I hope this information is helpful and will allow you to investigate further. I don't mind uploading or sending you a sample DNG that causes the errors but they are 50MB files and I don't have a place I could upload it too. Cheers, David Show quoted text

I downloaded a 1DSmkIII sample CR2 and downloaded Adobe DNG converter 4.4.1 and converted the CR2 to DNG using the default options, but exiftool 7.26 didn't have a problem with it. So it looks like I will need a sample from you to be able to reproduce this problem. If you can post it on a web server somewhere, it would be best. You can use yousendit.com if you don't have another site available.
I got your sample image, thanks. I can now reproduce the problem you are having. This bug affects exiftool versions 7.22-7.26, and it will be fixed in version 7.27 when it is released (in a few days). Thanks for reporting this, and thanks for your help in tracking down this problem! - Phil

Phil, Thank you for your time and the 7.27 release! What is the appropriate mechanism for sending updates/changes for Canon MakerNote Data and the specific details? For example the latest release of firmware for the Canon 1D MarkIII and Canon 1Ds MarkIII introduced changes in the "Selectable AF Point", are the following details sufficient? CanonCustom Functions2 Tags - > 0x509 SelectableAFPoint 3 = 19 Points, Multi-controller Selectable 4 = Inner 9 Points, Multi-controller Selectable 5 = Outer 9 Points, Mult-controller Selectable Cheers, David Show quoted text

This is great, thanks! I will add these. Were these modes added in a firmware upgrade? They don't appear in the 1D MarkIII User Manual. If so, were there any other new features added that I should know about? Thanks. - Phil

The changes are from new features added thru a firmware upgrade specific to the Canon Mark III bodies. I have included the second functionality change below and validated the makernote values. I am also attaching a PDF that came from Canon describing the functionality changes. CanonCustom Functions2 Tags -> 0x703 -> QuickControllDialInMeter 3 = AF Point Selection Swaped with Exposure Compensation4 = ISO Selection Swaped with Exposure CompensationI also identified what string value should be used a CanonExposureMode 7, I am one of the few I guess that do Bulb exposures. :) Canon CameraSettings Tags -> Tag ID 20 - CanonExposureMode 7 = Bulb Cheers, David Show quoted text

Great! Thanks for the firmware update documentation, and for the new values -- I will add them to the next release. If you discover anything else, please email me directly at phil at owl.phy.queensu.ca Thanks again! On Sun May 25 13:20:58 2008, pitcherd1@msn.com wrote: Show quoted text
