Subject: absences, defaults
The pairing table at http://chesschat.org/showpost.php?p=172383&postcount=10 has a dash for 17 and for 23 in the 5th round, the round before last. 17 downfloated in the round before last, and although 23 floated in the last round, it didn't float in the round before last. Presumably, 17 got a point without playing a game. Is this technically a bye? What is the right name for the results of these 2 players, Absent and ?? A5. Byes Should the total number of players be (or become) odd, one player ends up unpaired. This player receives a bye: no opponent, no color, 1 point. A bye is considered to be a downfloat. B1. a. Two players shall not meet more than once. b. A player who has received a point without playing, either through a bye or due to an opponent not appearing in time, shall not receive a bye. Perhaps it is not a bye. Anyway 0.14 (or scripts) is not able to handle this. pairtable2yaml assigns byes to both players. pair returns the error: Player 23 is Bye, and opponent Bye is , in round 5? at /usr/bin/pair line 104

I had a similar question for another tournament. I think, there are the following possibilities for a player in a swiss tournament. a) regular game a1) PlayerA wins the game (and vice versa) PlayerA: Win PlayerB: Loss score for PlayerA: 1 score for PlayerB: 0 representation of result: 1 : 0 (or 0 : 1 ) special consequences: none a2) the game ends with a draw PlayerA: Draw PlayerB: Draw score for PlayerA: 0.5 score for PlayerB: 0.5 representation of result: = : = special consequences: none b) game paired but not played b1) PlayerA wins by default (e.g. opponent didn't arrive in time) (and vice versa) PlayerA: Win by default (let's call it "WinByDefault"?) PlayerB: Loss by default ("LossByDefault"?) score for PlayerA: 1 score for PlayerB: 0 representation of result: + : - (or - : +) special consequences: * PlayerA shall not receive a bye in future rounds (B.1.b) * game not taken into account w/ respect to colors (F.2) * same pairing is legal in future rounds (F.2) * special treatment by color allocation (F.3 together with E.3) * floats are given as if the game was played b2) both players lose by default (e.g. both didn't arrive in time or they behaved unsportsmanlike) PlayerA: Loss by default PlayerB: Loss by default score for PlayerA: 0 score for PlayerB: 0 representation of result: - : - special consequences: * game not taken into account w/ respect to colors (F.2) * same pairing is legal in future rounds (F.2) * special treatment by color allocation (F.3 together with E.3) * floats are given as if the game was played c) player not paired c1) PlayerA gets a bye (no opponent was paired to PlayerA due to an odd number of players) PlayerA: Bye score for PlayerA: 1 representation of result: + special consequences: * PlayerA shall not receive a bye in future rounds (B.1.b) * PlayerA gets no color for this round (A.5) * PlayerA gets no opponent for this round (A.5, F.2) * PlayerA gets a downfloat (A.5) * special treatment by color allocation (F.3 together with E.3) c2) PlayerA is absent during a round (known in advance; (F.5)) PlayerA: Absence score for PlayerA: 0 representation of result: - special consequences: * PlayerA gets no color for this round (?) * PlayerA gets no opponent for this round (?) * special treatment by color allocation (F.3 together with E.3) c3) PlayerA is absent during a round (and that was not known in advance) see case b1) PlayerA: Loss by default score for PlayerA: 0 representation of result: - : + special consequences: * PlayerA is withdrawn from tournament But on the other hand I'm not sure about this list. Maybe we should as at chesschat.org? Best regards Christian

That's a useful list. chesschat seeems to be discussing these kinds of questions at the moment (http://chesschat.org/showthread.php?t=8355) It would be good to see your list get wider exposure. I don't understand how these rules work, but I am not a chess player. It is not at the arbiter's discretion?
