Subject: hint to use "reports" confusing
After installing 5.10.0, trying to install Mail::Box, I see some failing tests. That's ok. But then, CPAN.pm tries to help me with: //hint// To get more information about failing tests, try: reports MARKOV/Mail-Box-2.075.tar.gz What you expect is that "failing tests" is refering to the tests which were just run on your own system (the stdout/stderr output of them, for instance), but what you get is the summary of cpan-testers (which is quite uselessly listing all kinds of platforms I do not have) The whole procedure to come to the latter conclusion, is on its own quite ugly: read the attachement carefully. Probably the text of the hint should be improved and only shown when both YAML, CPAN::DistnameInfo, and LWP are installed. Suggested text: //hint// to see the cpan-testers results for installing this module

I can't follow you. I'd argue that it is *extremely* relevant how this software fares on other systems, even more so if it just failed on your system. I understand that the wording failed to set the expectations straight. Show quoted text

I like this and I just checked it in. But I'm not in favor of considering already installed software when talking about options. I have something to offer, the user must decide if he wants it. Installed software is no vote for or against anything, the installation can be deliberately or unintentionally incomplete. -- andreas

During the installation process, a lot of text is produced. The only way to present the message to the end-user, is to reduce the amount (to preferably less than a page). For instance, for the .nl-TLD I created a domain configuration checker: when someone orders a new domainname, the name-servers must be already up-n-running and correctly configured. When I find errors, I do not show hints. When I find no errors, I do show hints. Errors are more important than hints, and should be in the full and undisturbed focus of the reader. But this "hint" only appears when there is an error... Hum... Maybe consider the hint as part of the error message. Installation of Mail-Box-2.075.tar.gz failed For cpan-testers results on installing this module try reports MARKOV/Mail-Box-2.075.tar.gz (CPAN::DistnameInfo and LWP need to get installed first) Something like the latter line, to avoid people going that path when it is too much hassle. Maybe, the best solution is to refer to the webpage For other people's luck with installing this module see http://cpantesters.perl.org/show/Mail-Box.html#Mail-Box-2.075 .... and let the "reports" function to the real CPAN die-hards. -- Regards, MarkOv ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mark Overmeer MSc MARKOV Solutions Mark@Overmeer.net solutions@overmeer.net http://Mark.Overmeer.net http://solutions.overmeer.net
