Subject: Want --txt filetype
I see you've added a --text type, but it's just a catch-all for everything that isn't --binary. As such, it's turned off by default. I think ack needs a --txt type, which would be turned on by default. This would match .txt files, plus certain magic filenames like README*, INSTALL, NEWS*, Changes*, BUGS, TODO, etc. I'll send a patch if you're willing to merge it.
