Subject: make test fails in 02_error.t
Hi Marc Thanks for writing JSON::XS - I've found it to be very useful. I am getting a test failure trying to build the module on Debian Sarge for the AMD64 architecture. $ perl -V Summary of my perl5 (revision 5 version 8 subversion 4) configuration: Platform: osname=linux, osvers=2.6.12.6, archname=x86_64-linux-thread-multi uname='linux intrepid 2.6.12.6 #3 mon oct 31 12:47:37 cet 2005 x86_64 gnulinux ' config_args='-Dusethreads -Duselargefiles -Dccflags=-DDEBIAN -Dcccdlflags=-fPIC -Darchname=x86_64-linux -Dprefix=/usr -Dprivlib=/usr/share/perl/5.8 -Darchlib=/usr/lib/perl/5.8 -Dvendorprefix=/usr -Dvendorlib=/usr/share/perl5 -Dvendorarch=/usr/lib/perl5 -Dsiteprefix=/usr/local -Dsitelib=/usr/local/share/perl/5.8.4 -Dsitearch=/usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.4 -Dman1dir=/usr/share/man/man1 -Dman3dir=/usr/share/man/man3 -Dsiteman1dir=/usr/local/man/man1 -Dsiteman3dir=/usr/local/man/man3 -Dman1ext=1 -Dman3ext=3perl -Dpager=/usr/bin/sensible-pager -Uafs -Ud_csh -Uusesfio -Uusenm -Duseshrplib -Dlibperl=libperl.so.5.8.4 -Dd_dosuid -des' hint=recommended, useposix=true, d_sigaction=define usethreads=define use5005threads=undef useithreads=define usemultiplicity=define useperlio=define d_sfio=undef uselargefiles=define usesocks=undef use64bitint=define use64bitall=define uselongdouble=undef usemymalloc=n, bincompat5005=undef Compiler: cc='cc', ccflags ='-D_REENTRANT -D_GNU_SOURCE -DTHREADS_HAVE_PIDS -DDEBIAN -fno-strict-aliasing -I/usr/local/include -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64', optimize='-O2', cppflags='-D_REENTRANT -D_GNU_SOURCE -DTHREADS_HAVE_PIDS -DDEBIAN -fno-strict-aliasing -I/usr/local/include' ccversion='', gccversion='3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-13)', gccosandvers='' intsize=4, longsize=8, ptrsize=8, doublesize=8, byteorder=12345678 d_longlong=define, longlongsize=8, d_longdbl=define, longdblsize=16 ivtype='long', ivsize=8, nvtype='double', nvsize=8, Off_t='off_t', lseeksize=8 alignbytes=8, prototype=define Linker and Libraries: ld='cc', ldflags =' -L/usr/local/lib' libpth=/usr/local/lib /lib /usr/lib libs=-lgdbm -lgdbm_compat -ldb -ldl -lm -lpthread -lc -lcrypt perllibs=-ldl -lm -lpthread -lc -lcrypt libc=/lib/libc-2.3.2.so, so=so, useshrplib=true, libperl=libperl.so.5.8.4 gnulibc_version='2.3.2' Dynamic Linking: dlsrc=dl_dlopen.xs, dlext=so, d_dlsymun=undef, ccdlflags='-Wl,-E' cccdlflags='-fPIC', lddlflags='-shared -L/usr/local/lib' Characteristics of this binary (from libperl): Compile-time options: MULTIPLICITY USE_ITHREADS USE_64_BIT_INT USE_64_BIT_ALL USE_LARGE_FILES PERL_IMPLICIT_CONTEXT Built under linux Compiled at Aug 14 2006 10:44:59 @INC: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.4 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.4 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl Only one of the tests fails: $ prove -v -b t/02_error.t t/02_error....1..31 ok 1 ok 2 ok 3 ok 4 ok 5 ok 6 ok 7 ok 8 ok 9 ok 10 ok 11 ok 12 ok 13 ok 14 ok 15 ok 16 ok 17 ok 18 ok 19 ok 20 ok 21 ok 22 ok 23 ok 24 not ok 25 ok 26 ok 27 ok 28 ok 29 ok 30 ok 31 FAILED test 25 Failed 1/31 tests, 96.77% okay Failed Test Stat Wstat Total Fail Failed List of Failed ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- t/02_error.t 31 1 3.23% 25 Failed 1/1 test scripts, 0.00% okay. 1/31 subtests failed, 96.77% okay. I added a debugging print statement and it appears that $@ contains: 'Modification of a read-only value attempted at t/02_error.t line 39. ' Reproducible as follows: $ perl -MJSON::XS -le 'print JSON::XS->new->decode (undef)' Modification of a read-only value attempted at -e line 1. Cheers Grant

Thats a bug in your perl (5.8.4 is pretty old, and pretty buggy, especially with wide characters). You can safely ignore it, too, unless you rely on descriptive error messages or plan to use non-ascii in json, for which you will probably hit a number of other bugs in 5.8.4. Thanks for your report, and thanks for adding the extra information that allowed me to understand the problem that quickly :) (BTW, I would be thankful if, for future bug reports, you would avoid rt.cpan.org, thanks!).
