I've written a detailed report to the Debian bugtracker. The problem
happens identically when removing the libio-socket-ssl-perl and
libnet-ssleay-perl Debian packages and installing IO::Socket::SSL and
Net::SSLeay from CPAN (I'm still using the libssl0.9.8 (0.9.8e-4) Debian
package, though). Please see here:
