**There is a problem with parameters 'max_wait' and 'poll_time' into
wait_acquire() (at least, the documentation is wrong). These values are
not seconds, are microseconds.
Note that usleep($us) take microseconds arguments. Current default
poll_time is very very low (0,1 microseconds).
