Reading a CMYK JPEG image results in a 4-channel Imager image, which Image treats as a RGBA image. It should result in a RGB image. Also need to check: are the colors coming through correctly.

It turned out that colors weren't coming through correctly, they looked correct in some cases only because of the way photoshop inverts the CMYK values. This has been fixed in the development tree.
