Subject: make contributions easier ?

hello Regexp::Grammars people, It seems there is no CONTRIBUTING file in the Regexp::Grammars distro so when you click to "contribute" from the metacpan page, you ends up to a friendly "oops" message. Also there is no repository in the metafile so people can't help but sending some patches? did i miss something? i would be pleased to add those informations if you let me contribute. Another thing: it would be nice to update the status of the issues in the cpan tracker because: * from eagle eye, all those open (some very old) ticket gives a very bad and unfair feeling of the maintainance of the module * when opening a new issue, you have to check all of them to see if someone reported something similar * it would be easier to pick a ticket and fix it as first contribution thanks for reading me and maintaining this awesome module. regards marc

Hi Marc, There is no public repository for this module. I am, of course, happy to accept patches. Or, if you wish, I would also bw happy to grant you co-maintainer status and let you make any improvements you wish to the distribution. Let me know if you'd prefer that. Damian

so i will use the tarball as origin. right ? Show quoted text

as you saw in the other issue: i'm not confortable with the perl internals and will ask for code review anyway. also: as long as we don't have a public repo, i guess it will be hard to co-maintain consistently. that said... Show quoted text

i really appreciate to collaborate with you the way you think as the best one :) regards, marc

if co-maintainer means * review the RT queue * update the status of every tickets appropriatly * ask for infos from issuers when needed i'll be happy to handle it if you back me up on technical parts. regards marc

Hi Marc, I'm happy for you to take on any level of involvement in the maintenance of the module; whatever you feel comfortable with. The problem is that I have very little time to devote to the maintenance of this module (or of any of my many modules). And I have even less time for extended technical collaborations. Moreover, I am just about to start an extended sabbatical, during which I will have no time at all. So if you would like to send me patches against the current CPAN distribution, that would be great (though I may be slow to review and apply them in the coming months). Or if you would like PAUSE access to the module, so you can update status on bug reports, that would be great too (and I can set that up for you immediately). Or if you just want to send me requests-for-fixes or request-for-features, that's okay too (except that I will be extremely slow to act on such requests in the near future). However, to address the original point of this thread: I don't propose to change the way I currently maintain modules or to set up public repositories for any of them. If anyone prefers that approach, I am happy for them to fork the particular module (or to take over its entire maintenance) and then to set up such things themselves. All the best, Damian

hello Damian, as you don't have enough time to maintain the module, i really think that having github repo to let people do the job could be a good idea. so tell me if you agree with this plan: * i setup a github with the code shipped on CPAN (or any other code you'll provide) * i setup a CI for the repo * i'll do the housekeeping in the RT queue * i add a contributing.md file explaining that * the module maintainance is in a best effort (i'll do what i can) and there will be a very limited support to this module. * as sending you patches and bug reports directly is still welcome, the prefered way is to use RT and github tools (git-format-patch to me work as well) * releasing a new version on CPAN is up to you does it sound good to you?

It sounds great to me, Marc. I would be very grateful for your help, in whatever capacity and degree you feel comfortable offering it...and with no long-term expectations placed upon you from my end. In return, I will undertake to review patches and upload new releases in as timely a manner as I can manage, given all the other demands on my time. I have now set up co-maintainer status for you on the CPAN distribution, which may make acting on the RT queue easier for you. I am happy for you to set up a github repo based on the 2018-10-5 release on CPAN, as I have no pending changes after that date. Thank-you again for your interest in this module, and for your generosity in being willing to commit time and energy to it. I deeply appreciate it. Damian
