This kind of error indicates that the makefile is written for GNU make, and cannot be handled by FreeBSD's standard make.

Thanks for the report -- this should hopefully be fixed by new Alien::Unicruft v0.003 + libunicruft v0.24 (= suppress documentation builds for Alien::*). FreeBSD builds (e.g. http://www.cpantesters.org/cpan/report/de5982c6-fde6-11e8-adce-ed201592474f) appear to be working for Alien::Unicruft v0.003, marking as resolved.
