After poking around with this, I found with OSS support emulation installed ( snd-pcm-oss ), that set_cval() works as intended and can set the mixer to arbitrary values.
However, get_cval() always misreports the volume level.
And this leads the test suite to be a "maximise your volume levels" tool.
After patching the test to be clearer, its more obvious this is happening, but its not clear *why* its happening.
