RFC 3659 describes MLST and MLSD for returning stat-like information about files and for listing stat-like information about the contents of directories. In particular, whereas "list" returns human-oriented data resembling "ls -l", MLSD is very useful for returning such data in machine-oriented fashion.
If the answer is of the form "in principle, yes, but someone needs to do it, hint, hint...", let me know.
