Subject: hostname --fqdn is hostname -f on FreeBSD
See subject. FreeBSD (and possibly other BSD systems) don't implement hostname --fqdn, but have only the -f switch. From the manpage: -f Include domain information in the printed name. This is the default behavior. Linux also supports the -f switch. So for greater portability it would be better to use -f everywhere. Maybe even on Mac OS X -f exists (can't check now).

Yes, confirmed: `hostname -f` may be used also on $^O eq "darwin".
