According to Wikipedia articles <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICO_%28file_format%29> and <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Icon_Image_format>, recent flavors of both .ico and .icns supports embedding PNG data, which as I understand it means those files can contain metadata relevant for ExifTool to extract.
My interest in particular is to scan files for copyright and licensing hints. Exiftool has shown quite effective for that, as it can extract multiple layers of embeddedness: metadata inside ICC profiles inside some bitmap files.
