I'm sorting dates which includes years before 1000, but those sort in after the the current year (2016).

I have not been able to reproduce your issue exactly. The module was failing for me when using dates before 1ad. Could you test the development version at https://github.com/salva/p5-Sort-Key-DateTime ?
