Subject: Get rid of autosplit
autosplit tends to make things slower, not faster, on modern hardware, and it makes the code harder to read and maintain. Could the next GD release stop using autosplit?

Interesting. Is there some discussion about this in the internet, maybe also some numbers?

2.57 will still have it, but I'll look into it for 2.58, which will be out as soon as the permissions are set up. Generally I agree with you that the IO costs for it are too high. -- Reini Urban
