Subject: Invalid XML::Merge::VERSION causes build failures since ExtUtils-MakeMaker-7.06
$XML::Merge::VERSION 1.2.565EgGd in invalid version value. For example if XML::Merge is listed in requirements of distribution Makefile.PL, building the distribution fails with ExtUtils-MakeMaker-7.06 when it checks version of installed XML::Merge.

Module and distribution versions really should validate against version::is_lax. This is part of the META specification: https://metacpan.org/pod/CPAN::Meta::Spec#version1 https://metacpan.org/pod/CPAN::Meta::Spec#Version-Formats
