The cell border specification actually only accepts single-character directions (so the example "ns-30-db w-25" generates an "Unintelligible cell-border spec" error). A quick examination of the perl code shows that there is indeed a + missing from the actual pattern match, although it appears in the "Cell Border Syntax, Formally" description.
